Istituto di Fisica del Plasma Piero Caldirola, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR)

The Istituto di Fisica del Plasma CNR of Milan (IFP) is a research institute of the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), established In 1985 as EURATOM-ENEA-CNR Association, with the primary objective of pursuing scientific and technological research in the field of laboratory plasma physics, with particular focus on the interaction of electromagnetic waves with plasmas. IFP organization is historically along three functional lines with strong internal collaborations.

The first functional line is dedicated to carrying out experiments with high power millimiter waves for applications in the domain of thermonuclear fusion research and for the development of radiofrequency technologies, both at high power and at signal level for diagnostic systems. The second functional line is dedicated to applied research on plasma-materials interaction, and the development of processes of material treatment both for molecular dissociation of various substances, studies of dust formation in plasmas and the modification of surface properties. The third research line includes the development of plasma theory, with focus on electromagnetic wave interaction with plasmas, the advanced control of some tokamak MHD instabilities and the interpretation of tokamak experiments on fusion.

Training of IFP staff, as well as of university and PhD students, is pursued continuously with close collaboration with national and international scientific institutions and universities. The research activity of IFP is presently giving a significant and recognized support to the ITER project and JET operation through active contracts and staff secondment.
