Ghent University


The Belgian universities get a first-rate ranking on a global scale. The largest Belgian institutes, including Ghent University, are always present in the top-200 of more than 15.000 institutes for higher education of the world. Each year Ghent University occupies a more prominent place.  In 2014, Ghent University ranked 70 as top Belgian University in the Shangai Ranking. Ghent University, founded in 1817 has more than 40.000 student. Several of the Ghent University scientists of the last 200 years are renowned worldwide, and you will also find many prominent persons among the alumni.

 Ghent University is an open, committed and pluralistic university with a broad international perspective.


Gas discharges and plasmas have for decades been the main research area at the Department of Applied Physics in the Faculty of Engineering at Ghent University. The Department has three units.

The Unit Nuclear Fusion concentrates on the high temperature plasmas with the focus on three areas:

1. Plasma heating and control using the ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) method.
We investigate the physics and technological aspects of this heating method and the processes that accompagny it.

2. Advanced data analysis in massive fusion databases and for real-time plasma control.

We develop methods to handle the large amounts of data that are generated in the course of fusion research.

3. Plasma-wall interaction and study of first-wall materials.
We develop an understanding on how to optimise the materials that are subject to extreme conditions in the neighbourhood of the plasma.

The Unit Plasma Technology has its focus on non-thermal plasmas at atmospheric pressure. Next to the characterization and modelling of such plasmas, the research unit develops plasma sources for applications such as gas cleaning and surface modification. A recent new topic is the study of non-thermal plasmas in liquids.

The Unit Molecular Modeling of the department of applied physics is part of the Centre for Molecular Modeling. The Center focuses on research in six major areas - chemical kinetics in nanoporous materials, computational material research on the nanoscale, spectroscopy, many-particle physics, model development and bio- and organic chemistry.
