Postdoctoral Researcher in the area of edge-plasma physics in magnetic fusion energy devices

The Department of Applied Physics (http://physics.aalto.fi) at the School of Science is looking for a

Postdoctoral Researcher (fixed term) in the area of edge-plasma physics in magnetic fusion energy devices

to the Fusion and Plasma Physics Group (http://physics.aalto.fi/groups/fusion/). The group focuses on experimental and computational plasma physics in magnetically confined fusion experiments. Within this job posting the research project aims to improve understanding of the physics of the tokamak edge plasma for ITER and future burning plasma experiments by interpretative analysis of measurements in present devices, such as JET, ASDEX Upgrade and DIII-D, and predictions from state-of-the-art numerical simulation, like EDGE2D-EIRENE and SOLPS. The primary physics goals of these studies are controlling particle and power exhaust, and minimizing plasma-wall interaction in magnetically confined fusion devices.

Job description

The successful candidate is expected to analyze experimental data from the aforementioned experimental devices and to interpret these data by utilizing existing plasma edge codes. As a team member, she or he is anticipated to participate in and lead experiments, and to operate edge plasma diagnostics in support of other experiments. She or he is also expected to provide edge simulation support for other on-going or planned experiments. Introductory-level training in experimental techniques and code execution will be provided. Development and implementation of new physics models in these computational tools at the end of the post-doctorate period is anticipated. The successful candidate is expected to document and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings. She or he is anticipated to pursue independent, but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists both internally and externally.

Requirements

As a successful candidate for this position, you should have:

  • PhD degree in physics or related field
  • Knowledge in basic plasma physics
  • Experience in at least one of these fields: diagnostics, data analysis or computational physics; experience in high performance computing is highly desirable
  • Experience in carrying out independent research and working in a team environment to achieve programmatic goals in a timely fashion
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed literature and experience in presenting research results to a large audience
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English are necessary to work in a multidisciplinary team environment, author technical and scientific reports and publications, and deliver scientific presentations

The primary language of communication within the Fusion and Plasma Physics Group is English.

Skills, knowledge and abilities in the following areas are highly desirable:

  • Knowledge of edge plasma physics in fusion devices
  • Familiarity with edge plasma diagnostic techniques and atomic physics
  • Knowledge of tokamak operation and interpretation of experimental data
  • Experience in programming languages, such as C, C++, and Fortran
  • Experience with data analysis programming languages, such as IDL, Python, and MatLab
  • Experience with large edge plasma codes, e.g., SOLPS, EDGE2D, EMC3, EIRENE, ERO, DIVIMP
  • Experience collaborating with theorists and plasma modelers
