The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is looking for a
A materials technologist in the area of materials evaluation and testing and performance, to research materials in nuclear environments,
in their new Materials Research Facility (MRF), which the UK Atomic Energy Authority has recently built for use by fission and fusion nuclear materials scientists in the UK. The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy is one of the world`s leading fusion research laboratories and their scientists and engineers are working with partners around the globe to develop fusion as a new source of clean energy for tomorrow`s power stations.
Job description
The post-holder is expected to provide state-of-the-art knowledge to CCFE design engineers and technologists concerning material performance in harsh environments, identifying areas of risk and recommending testing solutions as needed. The applicant participates in the research, prototyping and verification of manufacturing processes and advanced materials. This is necessary in order to assure components, systems and facilities are delivered with appropriate levels of performance, statutory compliance and tolerable levels of risk.
Requirements
The requirements for this postion are:
- A degree or equivalent experience in materials science/engineering or other relevant areas
- Demonstrable experience of managing or conducting research projects with a degree of autonomy
- Commercial awareness and customer-interaction skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Self-motivated and capable of working in a team
The primary language of communication within the CCFE is English.
Skills, knowledge and abilities in the following areas are highly desirable:
- Knowledge of orthodox and advanced manufacturing practices
- Knowledge of radiation damage phenomena and issues affecting material performance in other harsh environment (e.g. temperature, vacuum)
- Experience of developing complex experiments and testing equipment required
- Experience of overseeing technicians, junior staff and/or students preferred
