Plasma transport code (JINTRAC) developer at CCFE

The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is looking for a

suitably experienced and highly motivated plasma modeller to work as a plasma transport code developer

at the Integrated Modelling Group (IMG), which works to develop and exploit theory and modelling tools to enhance our scientific understanding of fusion plasmas. This work is carried out with international collaborators and is essential for predicting and optimising plasma performance in future fusion devices. IMG has developed the tokamak plasma transport code JINTRAC, which solves coupled transport models in the edge and core regions of the plasma. This core-edge coupling is a unique capability that allows JINTRAC to address key questions of critical importance to the next step fusion tokamak experiment, ITER.

Job description

As the successful applicant, your primary role will be to make the code suitable for deployment at ITER. This will require: porting JINTRAC to the ITER integrated modelling and analysis platform (IMAS); decoupling JINTRAC modules into IMAS workflow components; and generating demonstration reference simulations within IMAS. Successful delivery will extend JINTRAC`s capabilities by allowing it to be integrated with other state-of-the-art modules in IMAS, and will allow JINTRAC to be more fully exploited for ITER scenario development. You will also be expected to contribute to the development, support and exploitation of JINTRAC for the benefit of the broader JET and CCFE science programmes.

Requirements

The requirements for this postion are:

  • PhD level knowledge of plasma physics
  • Demonstrated programming skills in Fortran, and working with legacy Fortran codes.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work effectively in a software development team
  • Knowledge and experience of integrated tokamak transport modelling
  • Experience of supporting users of large codes, the postholder is also expected to provide documentation for JINTRAC on IMAS
  • Willingness to travel: The post will be based either at CCFE or at ITER, but longer visits to the other site will be expected.

If you are looking for an outstanding two year opportunity and have the appropriate experience and a strong drive to succeed, then you should apply to join us at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy. There is a possibility that after two years the post will become permanent. For further information or to apply for this position, please check this website.
