Martin Greenwald blogs on the history of fusion research and its potential advantages when becoming a part of the energy mix. "Fusion is the big winner in external costs", Greenwald argues, i.e. costs that are borne by society as a whole and that don't factor into the costs of production. He ends by commenting on the cricism that the ITER project is slow and inefficient. That may be, he agrees, but we have to live with it and keep in mind that the costs need to be put into context, because "with a reasonable level of investment, the power source of the future could really be the power source of the future".
