FuseNet Photo of the Month - October 2013

Aerial view of the ITER site and close-up of the tokamak pit

The first photo shows an aerial view of the ITER worksite (September, 2013). Currently a little over 500 construction workers are active on the site, but at the peak of construction activity in 2014-2015, this number will rise to approximately 3,000.

The second photo shows a close-up of the tokamak seismic pit (September, 2013). Seismic pads are in place to protect the buildings and the equipment from ground motion in the case of a earthquake. The first two stages of creating the B2 basemat that will carry the tokamak complex (propping and formwork) are now completed. Reinforcements are now almost completed and soon an approximate 100,000 tons of concrete will be poured over, to form the a 1.5 meter thick floor. The basemat is scheduled to be completed end of this year.
