Francesca Cella - MSc thesis at IPFN

Supported by FuseNet, Francesca Cella went to Lisbon's Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear. For her MSc thesis she worked in the Theory and Modelling group where sje studied Alfvén instabilities in fusion plasmas. These instabilities can be detrimental to tokamak operation and thus need to be carefully understood. On her days of she discovered the two souls of Lisbon. What she means with that? Joint Varenna-Lausanne International Workshop on Theory of Fusion Plasmas


The biennial joint Varenna-Lausanne international workshop on the Theory of Fusion Plasmas will be held in Varenna, Italy, from 24 to 28 August 2020. Topics include anomalous transport, RF heating and current drive, non-axisymmetric configurations, macroinstabilities and magnetic reconnections, plasma-edge physics and divertors, and burning plasmas. PhD student can apply at a reduced fee.

Jos Scholte - internship at ENEA Brasimone

Supported by FuseNet, Jos Scholte went to ENEA Brasimone in Italy to work on a water-cooled lithium blanket. He modelled the injection of high-temperature pressured water into the experimental device. His simulations didn't match with experiments, at first at least. Normally, if the theory doesn't fit experimental data you throw out the theory, but in this case it was the other way around. Jos found out that a leaky valve was the culprit. He also loved his monday pizza sessions at work.

Control and operation of tokamaks

The doctoral-level course on Control and operation of tokamaks, organised by the EPFL's Swiss Plasma Centre and supported by FuseNet, allows PhD and Master's students to become familiar with the key issues in plasma control and operations. They will become acquainted with techniques for modeling the dynamical behavior of tokamaks and for design of control algorithms. During the course, students will do exercises using discharge preparation programs, equilibrium reconstruction codes, and control-oriented plasma models used in the tokamak community, in particular on the TCV tokamak.

Plasma diagnostics in basic plasma physics devices and tokamaks: from principles to practice

The doctoral-level course on Plasma diagnostics in basic plasma physics devices and tokamaks: from principles to practice, organised by the EPFL's Swiss Plasma Centre and supported by FuseNet, provides the theoretical background on electrostatic probes, magnetic probes and fast imaging in plasmas. Each lesson will be followed by class exercise and experimental practica on both the TCV tokamak and the TORPEX basic plasma physics device.

Sander Heester - internship at IPP Prague

Supported by FuseNet, Sander Heester worked at the Institute for Plasma Physics in Prague as part of his internship. During this time he worked on a new diagnostic for detection of runaway electrons in COMPASS tokamak, vertical-ECE. During the weekends he explored Prague and all it had to offer.

29th Symposium on Plasma Physics and Technology (SPPT2020)

The Symposium on Plasma Physics and Technology has a long tradition and is usually held biennially. This will be the 29th Symposium. It was originally founded for the presentation of results of the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (IPP CAS) in 1967. Since 1969 it has gradually become a Czechoslovak forum in this branch and many famous foreign scientists have made presentations. Since 1993 it has been held in co-operation with the Department of Physics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University (FEE CTU) in Prague.

PhD position on the development of a lithium based Vapour Box Divertor for a nuclear fusion reactor using the Magnum-PSI linear plasma device

Developing nuclear fusion power would create a zero-CO2 safe and continuous energy source with no long-lived radioactive waste. This is highly desirable for society, but a great challenge is to control the waste heat which arrives in the exhaust region, known as the divertor. This must be reduced to manageable levels before it reaches the wall, so that the reactor operates reliably over long timescales.Recent developments have opened a new path to power exhaust: to use a liquid metal (lithium) based wall which strongly evaporates, forming a vapour cloud in front of the wall which cools and redirects the heat, ultimately preventing any damage.
