Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research (DIFFER)

General profile

The Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research DIFFER is the Netherlands's national institute for basic energy research. The institute wishes to conduct leading fundamental research in the fields of fusion and solar fuels, in close partnership with academia and industry. The institute exploits large-scale experimental infrastructure to provide a key contribution to national energy research. To successfully transfer fundamental insights to society at large, the institute is actively building a national community for energy research.

Since April 2014, Marco de Baar is the new head of DIFFER's Nuclear Fusion Department.

Research profile

The DIFFER research theme on fusion addresses two topics, namely exploring plasma surface interactions under future reactor conditions, and developing understanding and tools to control the burning plasma in ITER and reactors beyond. Both themes are high priority topics in the European Fusion Roadmap.
