Plasma Physics - with focus on fusion applications

Course duration: September - December every year

Location: Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungary

This is an accredited course at BME of 4 ECTS value taught by Gergo Pokol (BME) and Sandor Zoletnik (Wigner RCP).

Application is either through the Neptun system for BME students (code: BMETE80MD02) or by e-mail to pokol@reak.bme.hu for external students with information on your current position and previous plasma physics studies. Application deadline is 1st September, but please apply as soon as possible to help the organizers! Course plan

Lectures are on Mondays from 8:30 to 11:45 with one break. 

  • Week 1: Introduction to plasma physics and fusion reactors (by Sandor Zoletnik),
  • Week 2: Collisionless motion of charged particles in magnetic field,
  • Week 3: Magnetic confinement configurations, 
  • Week 4: Thermodynamic equilibrium, ionization and radiative processes in the plasma,
  • Week 5: Plasma theory: kinetic description, fluid description, MHD, 
  • Week 6: Particle collisions in plasma, transport processes, 
  • Week 7: Inertial fusion
  • Week 8: Equilibrium in magnetically confined plasma and plasma waves,
  • Week 9: Instabilities in magnetically confined plasma, 
  • Week 10: Laboratory plasmas: breakdown, plasma heating, plasma-wall interaction, 
  • Week 11: Plasma diagnostics, measurement methods (by Sandor Zoletnik), 
  • Week 12: More on diagnostics, safety and radiation protection, 
  • Week 13: Recent progress in fusion research (by Sandor Zoletnik,
  • Week 14: Kinetic simulations of low temperature radio frequency plasmas (by Zoltan Donko),
