PhD position on optical measurements in ionization pressure gauges for strong magnetic fields

The Stellarator Edge and Divertor Physics Division of the Max-Planck-Institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald is offering a PhD position with the topic: "Optical Measurements in Ionization Pressure Gauges for Strong Magnetic Fields".

The object is the further development of ionization pressure gauges with LaB6 emitters. They were recently developed (Wenzel et al., Review of Scientific Instruments 89, 033503, 2018) and successfully tested in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator.

The task of the PhD candidate is to study the high pressure limit of the gauges. For this purpose he will develop an optical and infrared observation of the gauge for temperature measurement of the emitter and diagnostic purposes of the ionization volume.  After the successful realization of the experiment in the lab, it has to be applied to test pressure gauges in a magnetic field. We use a superconducting magnet at the University Greifswald. The behavior of prototypes with different geometries has to be studied in helium und hydrogen.

The experimental results have to be interpreted in the framework of existing models of the pressure gauge.  Possibly, the existing models have to be adapted to the LaB6 emitters.  Based on the results, improved pressure gauges will be built, suitable also for high-pressure devices as ITER.  The PhD candidate has the possibility to operate these new prototypes in the next experimental campaign of Wendelstein 7-X.

Requirement is a completed Master’s degree in the field of physics. The position requires good experimental skills, a strong academic record is expected. Knowledge of optical physics and interests in modeling would be an additional advantage, but not a precondition. Good knowledge of written and spoken English as well as good presentation and communication skills are expected.

The remuneration is paid according to the German Public Service Tariff Scale (TVöD) Group 13 (80%). The PhD position is limited for three years.

The IPP seeks to increase the proportion of employed women in those areas where they are underrepresented and explicitly encourages women to apply for this position. The IPP is committed to employing more disabled individuals and especially encourages them to apply.
