Control and operation of tokamaks

The doctoral-level course on Control and operation of tokamaks, organised by the EPFL's Swiss Plasma Centre and supported by FuseNet, allows PhD and Master's students to become familiar with the key issues in plasma control and operations. They will become acquainted with techniques for modeling the dynamical behavior of tokamaks and for design of control algorithms. During the course, students will do exercises using discharge preparation programs, equilibrium reconstruction codes, and control-oriented plasma models used in the tokamak community, in particular on the TCV tokamak.

The courses (this one and the Plasma diagnostics in basic plasma physics devices and tokamaks: from principles to practice course) are open to EPFL students and also students from other Universities and Institutes, including FUSENET members. Students can subscribe to a single course and apply for FUSENET funding. The course programs are specifically designed to bridge the gap between theory and experimental practice. Each course grants 2 ECTS.

The course on operations and control focuses engineering and physics aspects of creating and sustaining a plasma discharge in a tokamak. This includes study of plasma magnetic (position & shape) control, control of kinetic quantities and of plasma instabilities, discharge preparation including breakdown and real-time equilibrium reconstruction.
