Plasma Physics PhD - detachment and edge physics

Aalto University in Helsinki is inviting applications for one PhD position and one post-doctoral position in the field of edge-plasma physics.

The PhD position involves analysing experimental data from the JET and DIII-D tokamaks, and interpreting these data using existing plasma edge codes, such as SOLPS-ITER and EIRENE. The candidate is expected to publish 3-4 peer-reviewed articles during the course of the PhD, as well as present results at external conferences. Additionally, the candidate will spend some time at either JET in the UK, DIII-D in the USA, or another fusion research facility.

Requirements:

  • M.Sc. degree in plasma physics or a related field
  • Experience in computer programming languages, such as Fortran or C
  • Experience with data analysis programming languages, such as Python, MATLAB
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English

In addition, experience with spectroscopy, data analysis, and/or high-performance computing is highly desirable
