The 2nd day of FuseNet 2012 got off to a great start with an excellent lecture by Dr. Richard Pitts on the technical challenges of fusion. By the end of the lecture we were utterly convinced that there is plenty of difficult work to keep us busy for the foreseeable future.

During the poster session we were able to quiz half the group on their research topics, while being able to nibble on delicious mini muffins. The day was strategically punctuated with well-placed coffee breaks that provided a great opportunity to discuss the latest lecture, meet other students and top up our caffeine levels.

The poster session was followed by yet another sumptuous lunch that helped stimulate conversation about how best to tackle some of the difficulties of fusion.

After lunch we settled down for an afternoon of presentations. First up were PhD talks, this was an opportunity for students to present their work to the rest of the group. The schedule was strictly enforced using a variety of tactics such as stealing the microphone and noisy alarm clocks.

The last guest lecture of the day was by Prof. Bertrand Barréwho, who gave a first class overview of nuclear fission. After the fission lecture there was just time for a few 2^nd and 3^rd year students to squeeze in some more poster overviews before heading to the evening banquet, concluding the second day of the FuseNet PhD event.
