Tat Yiu Spencer Cheung - attendee KIT Summer School for Fusion Energy

Supported by FuseNet, Tat Yiu Spencer Cheung attended the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology International Summer School for Fusion Energy, where he got an in-depth overview of nuclear fusion. In the weekend he visited the city of Speyer, with its beautiful cathedral and impressive technical museum.

Edoardo Rovere - internship at SPC

Supported by FuseNet, Edoardo Rovere did an internship at the Swiss Plasma Center in Lausanne, where he worked on a database that can be used for emperical formulae and scaling laws in order to tackle EMLs in H-mode plasma. In the evenings he enjoyed the Lausanne-Flon district, bursting with life, discos and pubs.

Matteo Hakeem Kushoro – MSc thesis at CERN

Supported by FuseNet, Matteo Hakeem Kushoro went to CERN for his MSc thesis on a new concept for a solid crystalline detector, hopefully well-suited to fusion-like environments: the Silicon Carbide Detector. It was his first big experience in a large physics lab, which he found very stimulating.

Luca Spinicci - MSc thesis at CCFE

Supported by FuseNet, Luca Spinicci spent seven months working at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, where he worked on improving and debugging software related to ELMs. In his free time, he went punting in Oxford  and even grew some sunflowers in his backyard!

Francis Prasanth - internship at CIEMAT

Supported by FuseNet, Francis Prasanth got the opportunity to do a three-month internship at CIEMAT, Madrid, for investigating the role of Neutrals in the Turbulence processes in TJ-II Stellerator.

Oscar Putignano - internship at CNA

Supported by FuseNet, Oscar Putignano went to the Centro Nacional de Aceleradores (CNA) in Seville, where he worked on determining fast-ion-orbit kick. This is important in learning how to reduce ELMs in tokamaks, which are very bad for the wall of the vacuum vessel.

Jesper Cuperus - internship at COMPASS

Supported by FuseNet, Jesper Cuperus did his internship at COMPASS in Prague, where he worked on a calibrating a new spectrometer to measure poloidal rotation and ion temperatures near the plasma edge. After a great many iterations the system proved very useable for distinguishing between L- and H-mode.

Irene Casiraghi - internship at JET

Supported by FuseNet, Irene Casirahi went to JET at Culham Science Centre where she worked on transport behaviour in D-T plasmas. Notably, she looked at how different ion masses (hydrogen vs deuterium) change transport.

Álvaro Cubí - intership at IPP

Supported by FuseNet, Álvaro Cubí did his internship at the Max Plank Institute of Plasma Physics in Garching, Germany. He performed work related to neutronic simulations for DEMO's (post-ITER-generation) Neutral Beam Injectors. On his days off, he also discovered the joy of bouldering.

Igor Khodunov - internship at COMPASS

Supported by FuseNet, Igor Khodunov did an intership at IPP's COMPASS tokamak in Prague, where he worked on divertor detachment. In an environment where heat fluxes are extreme enough to melt the most hardy materials known to mankind, it is of quintessential importance to greatly deminish this heat flux before it hits the divertor.

Tiago Pomella Lobo - MSc thesis at Tritium Laboratory Karlsruhe

Supported by FuseNet, Tiago Pomella Lobo to the Tritium Laboratory Karlsruhe for his Master's thesis, where he studied the loss of gas through steel in one the experimental set-ups.

Liudas Karalius - internship at COMPASS

Supported by FuseNet, Liudas Karalius went on an internship to IPP's COMPASS tokamak in Prague. Hiswork focused on the development of an algorithm that  be used in searches of toroidal plasma centroid asymmetries during disruptions.

Antoine Baillod - MSc thesis at CCFE

Supported by FuseNet, Antoine Baillod went to CCFE's Joint European Torus (JET), where he worked on the data analysis of the JET lithium beam diagnostic, important for measuring the electron density.

Vignesh Gopakumar - MSc thesis at CCFE

Supported by FuseNet, Vignesh Gopakumar went to Culham Centre for Fusion Energy for his graduation project. He designed a machine learning algorithm that can help bridge the computational time gap between numerical models for the plasma core's behaviour and the plasma-wall behaviour.

Oleg Samoylov - MSc thesis at IPP

Supported by FuseNet, Oleg Samoylov went to IPP in Garching for his graduation project. The title of his project: modelling of the Electron cyclotron Transport of MHD modes in a tokamak geometry

Diogo Carvalho - internship at IPP COMPASS tokamak

Supported by FuseNet, Diogo Carvalho went on an internship to IPP's COMPASS tokamak in Prague. He worked on applying artificial neural networks to plasma tomography algorithms.

Andrea Piccione - MSc thesis at CCFE's MAST

Supported by FuseNet, Andrea Piccione went to Culham Centre for Fusion Energy for his MSc thesis, where he studied the dynamics of the filamentary structures moving across the Scrape-Off Layer in MAST.

Valeriia Istokskaia - attendee 14th Kudowa Summer School

Supported by FuseNet, Valeriia Istokskaia attended the 14th Kudowa Summer School in the Polish town of Kudowa-Zdroj. She learned about plasma basics and fusion energy, inertial and magnetic confinement fusion, plasma-diagnostics and technology, laser fusion and laser-matter interaction.

IPP Summer School for Plasma Physics and Fusion Research

Supported by FuseNet, Paul Stampfer, Christof Pichler, Borbála Szondy, Matteo Hakeem Kushoro, Mohsin Raza, Bjorn Lungberg, Christian Schuster and Federico Cappenberg attended the IPP Summer School in Greifswald, Northern Germany. They learned about plasmas, reactor concepts and the current barriers to a fully functioning reactor. They also got to take a peak into the control room of Greifswald's very own stellarator, Wendelstein 7-X.

Culham Plasma Physics Summer School 2018

Supported by FuseNet, Lorenzo Sala, Oleksandr Burlayenko, Bo Schmidt, Giorgio Guerini Rocco and Mirko Cagnetta attended the 55th Culham Plasma Physics Summer School, an international event held every year at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy.
