The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is looking for a

A materials scientist to help procure, install, operate and do experimental research with mechanical and thermo-physical testing and other equipment

in their new Materials Research Facility (MRF), which the UK Atomic Energy Authority has recently built for use by fission and fusion nuclear materials scientists in the UK. The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy is one of the world`s leading fusion research laboratories and their scientists and engineers are working with partners around the globe to develop fusion as a new source of clean energy for tomorrow`s power stations.

The post is in the Theory & Modelling department as this is where most of CCFE`s expertise on the science of irradiated materials resides.

Job description

The post-holder is expected to interact with users of the MRF (ranging from initial customer enquiry to training users and participating in experiments), help define the needs for new equipment and install, commission and operate this, and participate in UKAEA’s own research programme utilising MRF (on average 30% of the time). The role will concentrate on mechanical and thermo-physical testing, as these are the experimental techniques that users have requested and for which near-term investment in MRF will occur.
